Fall Table Styling

Here at Joy Johnston Design we love any opportunity to make things beautiful, and help you do the same. To enrich your thanksgiving plans, we’ve curated a shortlist of décor elements we love to use when creating the perfect understated fall tablescape. Keep things as simple or as abundant as you like, but adding at least one or two of these touches will add value to your gathering and have your guests feeling special and loved.

1) Foraged Stems

Fall is the best season for foraging stems. Simple grasses, wildflowers and branches are readily and easily available.

2) Natural fabrics

It can be tempting to buy obvious fall patterns, but simple natural linens with a subtle stripe or plaid pattern will keep it understated and can be used again and again. Linen, cotton, wool, jute and sisal are a few of our favourites.

3) Candles

The simplest and most impactful way to add warmth and a welcoming atmosphere to your table. We suggest avoiding scented and sticking to unscented or a natural beeswax so the aromas from the meal take centre stage.

4) Stoneware & Pottery

Handmade and textural tableware provide an earthy and enjoyable dining experience. The primitive design is beautiful reminder that humans have enjoyed sharing meals together for centuries.

5) Earthy colours & textures

All of those beautiful rich and deep tones and textures that you would find in a fall vegetable patch are wonderful to incorporate in your florals, napkins, candles or placemats.

6) Fresh Herbs

If you have an herb garden, now is the time to snip those stems and add them to a bud vase or on top of a plate or napkin for a truly organic and oh-so-easy element. We especially love Rosemary & Sage.

7) Vintage Finds

Even if you’re someone who doesn’t normally incorporate vintage elements, now is the perfect time to add some vintage brass, copper or tarnished silver to your tablescape.

8) Pumpkins & Gourds

You already know this one! We love pumpkins for the ultimate harvest time element. Using miniatures for each plate or adding larger versions as centrepieces is always in style.

There you have it! The items that we believe will speak to the heart of your guests this thanksgiving and compliment the true main events – food and the fellowship.

Check out the shop for some great options to add to your decor (we’ve added a few of our favourites below!) and head over to Pinterest to find more of our Fall Tablescapes inspiration and everything you’ve seen here.
